Troop 900 leaders took part in Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) training this fall, sharpening the outdoor skills that help us run safe and effective Troop programs.
What made this session special was the presence of Scout Maxton Royal, who attended alongside his dad, Assistant Scoutmaster John Royal. Maxton didn’t just observe — he stepped up and helped teach portions of the classes. Watching a Scout share knowledge with adult leaders is exactly the kind of youth leadership we work to develop in Troop 900.
IOLS covers the fundamentals every adult needs: campsite selection, tent pitching, fire building, cooking, knots, first aid considerations, and Leave No Trace principles. Having a capable Scout like Maxton assist showed both the quality of our program and the confidence our Scouts are gaining.
Thank you to John and Maxton for representing the Troop so well, and to all the leaders who invested the time to strengthen their outdoor skills. Better-trained adults mean better adventures for every Scout.
