Troop 900 headed back to the high country for another stretch of the Appalachian Trail, this time starting at Massey Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park and hiking down to Wise Shelter.
Massey Gap sits at roughly 4,200–4,600 feet, giving the Troop a strong high-elevation starting point. From there the trail winds through the open balds and rocky terrain of the Grayson Highlands before dropping toward Wise Shelter, which sits at about 4,460 feet. The route offers classic highland views, rocky stretches, and the chance to experience one of the most scenic sections of the AT in Virginia without the full climb all the way to Mount Rogers (5,729 ft) or Thomas Knob (5,400 ft).
These high-country miles are excellent training for the Troop. The elevation, exposure, and trail conditions push Scouts to manage their pace, stay aware of weather, and practice good backpacking habits. Wise Shelter itself is a solid destination — a classic AT lean-to with good water nearby and a true mountain feel.
