Troop 900 set out from Grayson Highlands State Park on a cold December weekend in 2025, packs heavy and spirits high, bound for Thomas Knob Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. The climb carried them from the park’s lower elevations up toward 5,400 feet, where the air thinned and the world opened into the high balds of the Mount Rogers country.
Fresh snow still blanketed the rocks and meadows from a recent storm. Every step crunched. The wind cut straight through layers. By the time the wooden shelter came into view, fingers were numb and breath hung in white clouds. They froze their tails off that night—boots stiff by morning, water bottles half-solid, the kind of cold that settles deep in your bones.
Yet no one would have traded it. The ponies moved like ghosts across the white meadows. The views stretched forever under a hard winter sky. Around the shelter, the troop laughed through chattering teeth, shared cold food, and watched the stars come out sharper than any of them had ever seen.
It was miserable in the best way. An amazing trip.
